LX Pantos Launches U.S.-based Joint Venture with

Ocean Network Express

- New joint venture, Boxlinks, aims to strengthen inland transportation services across the U.S.

- Plans include developing intermodal logistics solutions integrating rail and truck services

On February 4th, 2025, LX Pantos announced the successful establishment of Boxlinks, a joint venture (JV) with Ocean Network Express (ONE), the world’s sixth-largest container liner shipping company, to expand its logistics presence in the U.S. This milestone marks the first instance of a Korean logistics provider forming a JV with ONE in the U.S. market.

Founded in 2017, ONE is headquartered in Singapore, and has a strong global presence including operations in Korea and the U.S. It has a fleet size of more than 1.9 million TEUs, and a fleet of over 240 vessels deployed across a comprehensive service network spanning across 120 countries.

The two companies have closely collaborated since 2023 to develop a strategic approach to penetrating the North American logistics market. After two years of preparatory work, the JV is now officially established.

Through Boxlinks, LX Pantos and ONE will expand their presence in the U.S. domestic intermodal transportation sector, offering integrated logistics services that seamlessly combine rail and truck transportation to enhance supply chain efficiency.

The JV will hold rights to manage ONE’s inland-to-coastal domestic transport needs through a Domestic Reposition Program (DRP). By leveraging empty containers for intermodal operations, Boxlinks aims to create new revenue streams while improving operational efficiency. This initiative is designed to optimize empty container repositioning and unlock additional value-added transportation opportunities, ensuring a mutually beneficial business model.

As the world’s largest consumer market, the U.S. heavily relies on imports for containerized cargo movement. A significant portion of containers transported inland from major ports—such as Los Angeles (West Coast), Savannah, and New York (East Coast)—often return empty due to limited export cargo.

To support its operations, Boxlinks has secured direct agreements with major U.S. rail operators, including Union Pacific (UP), Norfolk Southern (NS), and BNSF. These agreements will allow Boxlinks to establish a robust rail network connecting key logistics hubs across the country while securing competitive freight rates.

The U.S. intermodal market is currently experiencing significant growth. According to the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA), the market is presently valued at approximately KRW 79 trillion and is projected to achieve a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.9% through 2030.

Commenting on the new joint venture, Lee Yong-Ho, CEO of LX Pantos, stated, “This joint venture will serve as a strategic foothold for our penetration into the U.S., the world’s largest logistics market. We are committed to advancing our end-to-end logistics services by integrating international shipping with inland rail services, further strengthening our market position.”
